Having a project

When one decides to breed it is essential to have a breeding project in mind: it is in fact unthinkable to breed at random or for the romantic idea (apparently noble, but in reality disastrous) of putting a male and a female together to have kittens. Catteries are full of cats and it is unnecessary to bring other creatures into the world out of selfishness. Breeding means preserving a breed and trying to improve it primarily in terms of health and then aesthetics, following one's own idea of a cat belonging to the breed is chosen to breed. By own idea I mean having in mind the characteristics of the chosen breed that you want to fix, highlight, develop, etc. obviously always having as reference the standard of the association to which you belong (Fifa, CFA, etc.). Having an idea of the ideal cat in mind helps in difficult moments that inevitably happen in the life of every breeder. Let me give a basic and generic example: if I decide that my ideal Siamese must have a perfect contrast, I will look for breeders that have perfectly contrasted cats and I will select only well-contrasted cats (with all the necessary difficulties, as kittens of a few months are always well contested and it will therefore be necessary to monitor their growth). Obviously I will have to know the pedigrees of the cats that I decide to include in my breeding plan because the characteristics of the close ancestors (and for some health characteristics even more distant) recur in the offspring. Once I've managed to get the contrast I wanted I can move on to other features, such as eye color or ear position or tail length or any other feature. Breeding is therefore a process, a work in progress, a very long work in progress that makes sense only if you have in mind an idea of the cat of our breed that we would like and which is based on patience, study, knowledge and obviously, as in all things, even luck.

MY IDEAL SIAMESE

When it comes to Siamese, ears are mentioned more and more often first, with two factions: lovers of extreme cats (very low ears) and lovers of the more classic type (higher ears). I love both types (of course I don't like Siamese with ears that are too high, as I find them (and it's a purely personal taste) too old as a type of cat. I can appreciate both types of ears, as long as they are wide and as large as it should be in a Siamese. My ideal Siamese must therefore have:

-Pretty large ears at the base, tapering to the tip. I like them in any position as long as they are not too high set on the head.

-Have a long and tubular body: between the more massive and the slimmer types, I prefer the more slender type of cat.

-A very long queue

- Long thin legs

- Almond-shaped eyes tilted towards the ears

-A nice contrast between the Points and the rest of the body.

My Clarissa above has a head that I adore, with very  almond-shaped eyes, a long muzzle and very large ears.

How do I choose my cats?

As far as I'm concerned, a serious breeder must select (in order) for:

1-Health

2-Temper

3-Beauty

1-Breeding by health means that all the cats will be tested for genetic diseases of the breed and above all the pedigrees of the cats that we intend to use will be studied, obviously collecting information not only from those who give us the breeding cat, but also from other breeders, to reconstruct as accurately as possible the health history of our future breeding group.

2-Selecting by temper means choosing our breeding cats not only for their health but also for their character. Cats must be docile, sweet, affectionate and must be sociable. Obviously the environment and the breeder's socialization work does a lot, but basically a reproducer must have a splendid temper that will often pass on to the kittens. Our kittens will be the company of other families and it is the precise duty of a breeder to give well socialised and sociable cats.

3-Selecting by beauty means selecting the cat that comes closest to our ideal type of cat (of the chosen breed), as explained in the previous two paragraphs.
